JOB DESCRIPTIONThe State & Local Tax (SALT) Director will operate as the subject matter expert for all state and local income, sales/use & property tax matters. They will be responsible for state tax planning & filing positions, state tax audit management & defense, and the development and implementation of tax strategies, policies, and procedures for the business units. Overall responsibility for developing strategy related to state income & franchise, sales & use, and property taxes. Deliver a full range of state and local tax services including: Perform and/or oversee state tax planning & state tax controversy matters, including settlement negotiations. Validate state tax credit opportunities and oversee the generation or purchase of such credits. Perform and oversee state and local tax research matters, including preparation and/or review of technical memorandums and inclusion of those outcomes in the finance function and business operating units. Manage the use of outside consultants on various projects & maintain state consulting budget. Conduct top level review of complex state and local tax returns. Provide input and support for state income tax expense and determine ASC 740-10 state income tax reserves for quarterly and annual financial statement reporting. Supporting continuous improvement efforts for day to day tax functionality and compliance. Manage, develop, train, and mentor staff on tax projects and assess performance for engagement and year-end reviews.
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, CPA, Masters in Taxation, LLM in Taxation, or JD. A minimum of eight years of progressive State and Local Tax consulting and/or compliance experience in public accounting or a combination of corporate and public accounting with demonstrated tax planning capabilities. Sound analytical and tax technical skills with proficiency in corporate combined & separate entity state income tax return and sales & use tax return compliance. Understanding of the impact of state filing decisions on the income tax provision and reserves. Ability to prioritize and execute tasks in a self-directed environment. Outstanding leadership, business development, recruiting, training, coaching, and mentoring skills, coupled with excellent written, interpersonal, and presentation skills. Strong focus on team leadership, including the ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with internal and external parties. Computer expertise including basic knowledge of tax software and technology.
