JOB DESCRIPTION

A local full-service Credit Union serving employees of two of the world’s largest international financial organizations seeks a Controller for their Washington, DC headquarters. This service-oriented financial cooperative provides banking services, lines of credit, loans and more to financial institution employees and their families. The Credit Union prides itself on being an excellent place to work and places a high value on the quality of life of its employees. The Controller will report to directly to the CFO and will be responsible for managing six or more management-level employees. The incumbent will provide direction and leadership for the Credit Union’s accounting activities, including planning, analyzing, organizing and directing the accounting department goals and objectives. The ideal candidate will have served in a supervisory role in a commercial banking or large credit union setting and will possess a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation. Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to: • Making recommendations to the Chief Financial Officer for short and long-term strategic goals of the Accounting Department as they relate to the overall objectives of the Credit Union. • Managing the activities of the Accounting Department supervisor, including training, scheduling, assigning duties, providing annual performance reviews and counseling as necessary. • Working with the supervisor to develop short- and long-term goals in order to assist their overall development and periodically to reviewing progress. • Managing the short-term investment portfolio, which includes cash and Federal Funds. • Monitoring and adjusting the cash position as necessary to meet daily liquidity needs and federally mandated reserve requirements. • Monitoring all new accounting rules and regulations. Working with the Chief Financial Officer to develop any new policies, procedures and internal controls that may be necessary to comply with new or amended rules and regulations. • Evaluating and making appropriate improvements to internal accounting processes, ensuring practices are in line with the overall goals of the organization. • Managing the preparation of Credit Union financial statements, ensuring compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and regulations. • Creating and preparing management and financial reports, including the Managing Director’s report (“Board Package”), accompanying financial statements and attachments and other monthly reports for the Board of Directors. • Organizing the preparation and submission of various external reports, including the District of Columbia Personal Property Tax Report, NCUA 5300 Report, FRB 2900 Report and Report of Backup Withholding (IRS Form 945). • Maintaining monthly adjustments to BFSFCU mortgage pipeline and risk-exposure hedging as detailed in SFAS 133 or subsequent accounting directives. • Participating in annual Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) and Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) training and demonstrating knowledge and understanding of the BSA and OFAC, including the immediate reporting of unusual or suspicious activity to the Risk Management Department. • Ensure the Credit Union’s safe harbor protections as allowed by the BSA.

QUALIFICATIONS

A well-qualified candidate will possess the following: • A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or a related discipline. • CPA designation. • Accounting experience in a commercial banking or large credit union setting. • Three to five years of accounting supervisory experience. • Advanced proficiency in MS Excel.
