JOB DESCRIPTIONA major utility company in downtown Washington, DC seeks an experienced Sr. Accountant for immediate hire at their Constitution Ave. location. The incumbent will report directly to the Manager of Technical Accounting and be part of a dynamic team of accountants at a company known for investing in the professional development of their employees. Officially titled Sr. Specialist, Technical Accounting and Special Projects, the incumbent will be responsible for assessing and documenting the impact of new accounting standards on the Company’s practices, processes and procedures, especially as Generally Accepted Accounting Principles in the United States of America (US GAAP) converge with international standards. The incumbent will also be tasked with assessing new business events and transactions to determine their effect on the company's financial statements and assist with reporting. Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Monitor proposed accounting standards to assess the impact of the proposal on the Company’s financial statements and draft comments on new standards during the Financial Accounting Standards Board’s (FASB’s) comment period. Monitor new accounting standards issued to assess and document their impact on the Company’s practices, processes and procedures. Assist in implementing changes in accounting processes and required disclosures as a result of new accounting standards. Monitor and assess new business events and transactions in terms of their ramifications on the Company's financial statements, research relevant accounting standards and formally document the appropriate accounting and reporting treatment. Assist with the preparation of all non-SEC financial reports including the FERC Forms 2, 2A and 3Q and other miscellaneous reports to governmental agencies. Maintain written policies and procedures and improve workflow, systems and processes. Provide formal responses to inquiries or other information requested monthly, quarterly or annually by senior management, other business units and internal and external auditors. Perform other special projects as directed by the Supervisor of Technical and Benefits Accounting.
A minimum of 5 years of accounting experience, with significant experience in technical accounting or accounting policy. Extensive knowledge of GAAP and a demonstrated ability to research and prepare formal written accounting position papers. Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply accounting guidelines issued pursuant to FASB, AICPA, IASB, the SEC and the FERC and financial reporting requirements. The ability to analyze, manipulate and interpret data and identify relevant issues in solving business problems. The ability to establish rapport and effective working relationships with business partners, supervisors, subordinates and peers.
