JOB DESCRIPTIONBASIC PURPOSE OF POSITION: The primary purpose of this position is to provide financial information, advise, control and planning, and business recommendations with regard to the operations and performance of the regional retail store business. This control, planning and advise and these recommendations must be based upon sound business judgment and a thorough understanding of dynamics and objectives of the retail operation. PRINCIPLE ACCOUNTABILITY: Maintaining the zone's integrity and improving the profitability through developing, monitoring and controlling all financial, strategic, and statistical data. These include: I. Performance Reporting and Analysis A. Provide zone management with accurate and timely financial information. Interpret and advise zone and district management to promote sound business decisions. B. Provide HQ management with financial information as required that appropriately indicates the zone's financial position and condition. C. Conduct financial analysis to support management actions and programs. Advise, recommend and help implement accepted actions or programs. D. Develop and maintain performance reports that enable zone and district management to understand and interpret store performance. WORK ENVIRONMENT: This position provides key assistance and financial balance to the Zone Manager. The Zone Controller must be a seasoned individual with good business and organizational skills who can act as a sounding board as well as a check upon his Zone Manager. He must be responsive to AMTS reporting requirements (Controller, Manager Auditing) and due dates, the Zone Manager, plans, programs and timetables, and the store and district managers financial, systems and operational questions and desires and needs. Since these demands will not always coincide, the controller must be able to conceptualize, coordinate, prioritize, organize and delegate. NATURE OF DECISION-MAKING: Independent Decisions: - Completeness, thoroughness, quality and integrity of financial plans. - All financial and statistical information presented and available to zone manager, district managers and Stores - Independent assessment of district manager effectiveness and proposals for improvement in expense control, (e.g. stores with high payroll); margin improvement (e.g. pricing); mix improvement (e.g. store with low shock sales); etc., and asset control (e.g. inventory levels). - Asset approval consistent with corporate guidelines. Dependent Decision-Making: The controller makes recommendations to the zone manager in these examples: The zone manager makes the final decision. -Profit level projection commitments. -Stores to be closed; locations to be opened. -Districts and stores where management changes may be necessary. -Incentive programs. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Principal Accountabilities (Cont'd): E. Ensure appropriate reporting is maintained to focus zone and district management attention on customer relations. II. Budget, Forecasts and Plans A. Develop and coordinate the zone budget and forecast process. Ensure the integrity of the financial information and the consistency with zone management business plans. B. Prepare budget and forecast presentations and schedules that clearly describe, support, and interpret the financial budget. C. Develop zone and district plans that provide zone and district management with assessments of their present and future business. III. Accounting and Controls A. Facilitate the accounting function and process by ensuring that appropriate systems are in place to accurately record and report the store, district, and zone operations. B. Maintain a system of internal controls to provide reasonable assurance that transactions are properly recorded, policies and procedures are followed, and assets are protected. IV. Program Implementation A. Take an active role in the development and implementation of financial and marketing programs that support short and long term profitability. B. Advise and assist in the development of educational programs that improve the ability of zone, district, and store personnel to understand, control, and manage their business. V. Personnel Development A. Promote the personnel development of the Financial Analyst by providing educational opportunities. B. Develop the analytical and general business skills of Assistant District Managers to enhance and expand their contribution to the districts.
